RIBA: Mind the energy performance gap

AJ1jpg.jpg

While completing her MA at the University of Nottingham, Kerala-based practitioner, Amrutha Kishor, worked with Allan Joyce Architects to look at how energy performance differed between predicted and actual energy consumption in newly-built houses.

The research project (Energy Performance Gaps in Residences in the UK) involved creating simple models of seven differing typologies/house designs completed by the Nottingham-based practice between 1998 and 2018 and used actual data from residents’ energy bills to show how software-generated predictions did not match actual energy use.

Practice Director, Tricia Akers, will provide the context for the research and Presidents Awards submission, with a more detailed look at three of the typologies presented by researcher Amrutha Kishor; Architectural designer, NDSA Committee member Sara Saadouni will explain how the findings of the research have impacted subsequent projects undertaken by the practice.
